‘I work for Nike’ or ‘I’m an engineer at Apple’ are useful things to be able to say at a party. Immediately the lucky hearer can conjure up images of that company’s respective products and brand values and that knowledge helps you to ease your transition into talking about more important things like football or the optimum strategy for securing above average quantities of nibbles*.
Osper has only existed for a couple of years and been public for a few months, and as a result not many people have heard of us. That’s fine, but as a relatively unknown company it means that the initial couple of minutes of a conversation with someone who’s interested in ‘what you’re up to now’ can be laboured.
It often feels like a well-rehearsed pitch more than a conversation—which might be soul destroying if you work for a company disrupting customer retention management for insurance brokers . But at Osper we have a strong mission that we all believe in and (most fortunately for our dinner party protagonist) most other people can get behind too.
We believe in learning by doing, we believe that what you learn when young shapes the way you live your life and most of all we believe in the infinite power of young people.
We’re so proud of our mission and values that we try and filter them through every aspect of our culture. Most importantly we like to bring onboard people that share our belief – so much so that they’re grabbing young relatives to do user testing before their first interview and surprising us with new insights in their first five minutes in our office.
Those people will rock that party. They won’t let anyone leave until they’re advocates and looking to find the nearest child or cousin to sign up themselves. They will also bring insight throughout their time at Osper and help to shape our young product for years to come.
That’s why being passionate about our core beliefs is number 1 on our list of ‘must haves’ when we look for new people (which we’re doing at the moment by the way).
